Need help with Merlin (the cat) already!

He wailed quite a bit last night (he was shut in the kitchen) and has spent most of today napping under our duvet (no not the bed - the duvet) any ideas of an alternative I can get for him. It's really dangerous as you can't really see him under the duvet keep thinking someone may sit on him!

He seems happy enough - if you go under the duvet and stroke him he purrs away.

I haven't got an old duvet to give him in the kitchen either.

Try a cardboard box for him in the kitchen -cut a hole in it for access or tip it on its side so it has walls and a roof, pop an old towel or something in and he'll find that cosy (judging by our cat thats now asleep in the big box DS and DD were playing in earlier! ).

Also play with him and wear him out a bit during the day and evening and hopefully he'll be too knackered to wail all night.

The wailing will stop after a few nights - it's just him settling in/getting used to new surroundings. Try putting an old jumper /t-shirt in the box (best to wear it for a little while first) with your smell on.

I found it was best to shut my kitty up in one room (at night and if I was going out) until he got used to the place.

That's a coincidence - my cat's called Merlin too! Great name . I thought it was quite unusual when we picked it, but have since heard of a few feline Merlin's.

Was last night any better buffysmum?

Last night (night 3) I added a folded blanket to the box as well as dp's shirt and I didn't hear any wailing (or did I just sleep thru it?) this made the space much smaller so I thought a bit like sleeping under the duvet.

He is a noisy cat it is partly the breed and it's going to take getting used to. I do hope he calms down a bit though as it's high pitched and goes thru me.

Managed to get a cat tree thing thru freecycle which I will collect later as his claws are very sharp and he pads constantly.

Why did I want another cat again???????

Is he a kitten? If he is put a small alarm clock under his blankets they are reassured by the ticking as it reminds them of their mother's heartbeat.
