MY DOG IS PREGNANT - HELP

Please, any info gratefully received. A stray dog followed my daughter home approx. 7 weeks ago. The long legged Jack Russell stayed with us for more than 3 weeks until we found the owner. In the meantime my English Springer Spaniel bitch came on heat and I caught them "in the act". To cut a very long story short (the Jack is now back with us), since last week my dog is obviously pregnant. She is 8 years old and I cannot afford to go to the vet. Will she have any problems that I need to address? I have ruld ouot vitamins beacause the pups will already be formed. Thanks.

Hi Faith,
Your bitch is far too old to be having her first litter. Is there a PDSA vet anywhere near you? You really need to get her seen by a vet asap. I don't want to worry you but a bitch having her first litter at this age could be life threatening. Also if you don't have enough money to pay for the vet, then you really don't have the money to raise a litter properly. A C-section and after care could cost you £500+. Raising a litter could set you back £1000. Also if you can't find the pups good homes then you will have the added cost of keeping them till adulthood.

If I were you I would have her spayed now - this will end the pregnancy. There is a morning after injection for dogs, but it's a bit late for that now. Hope you get something sort. Good Luck

Oh dear Faith.
Ok your dog is old but how fit is she?
Our beagle is 6 years old and having her first litter but it was planned. She is very fit and in good condition. Our vet is aware.

Are you registered with a vet?

I would ring up a vet and say your dog has become pregnant but you cannot afford the vets fees do they have any suggestions.
I am thinking that she may have to be spayed too and contacting the PDSA is the best idea.

Blimey this thread has opened my eyes
So didn't realise that dogs can't be older mothers
And as for the morning after injection

You need to take her to the vet as Joannie2 says. If you cannot afford to care for her then taking on another dog isn't going to help - ring the RSPCA they will sort out your bitch if you really cannot finance her treatment and they can rehome the Jack Russell. I would think carefully about starting a savings plan (probably too old for insurance) incase anything goes wrong in the future you need to be prepared to pay for vetinary treatment.

Hope all goes well for you.
