Our corn snake isn't eating. How worried should we be?

It's been more than three weeks since he last ate a mouse.

The first one he didn't eat wasn't an issue since we thought he might be getting ready to shed, and sure enough he shed a couple of days later.

We tried again after that, left it for a few days till he started roaming the vivarium again, and then he still didn't eat.

Is it the season? And when do you worry and take them to a vet?

He's nearly 5 years old; we've had him for nearly 4 years. This is the first time he's done this.

I had this happen with my corn snake once. Took her to the vets to hear the mortifying words "she's fat"! Oops! She started eating on her own again.

How big is she? What does she eat? Size of food? Is she ok in herself apart from not eating? Smile

Oops he not she! Sorry Blush

He's being very energetic and seems OK,though I wonder if he looks a bit skinny.

It IS mating season so could be that, I just don't know if they are affected by that if they aren't around other snakes.

We'll take him to the vet if he doesn't eat for another week, I think. Apparently they can go a couple of months without eating during mating season. Shock

He's on full size mice now, has been for 6 months or so.

Sounds like it could be breeding season?

My little fella is only 7 months so I have all the joys of breeding season madness to come but there is a corn snake group on facebook where I lurk to learn new things and lots of other people's adult snakes have been off their feed.

Skinnyness wise they reckon if you imagine a cross section of your snake, triangle shape would be skinny, slice of bread shape is just right and round is overweight.

Hopefully it won't be long until your fella is eating again

Thanks for the info.

DH said we probably shouldn't take an actual cross section of the snake (I think he'd had too much to drink...) but we'll check that. Grin
