I had border collie bitch as rescue. she was done before her first season, didn't do her any harm at all. reduced her chances of mammary cancer to nil. it's an old wives tale that bitches need a season, my old lab/collie had phantom preg after 1st season, caused her misery.
got springer boy now, also rescue

Agree with the wait being a bit of an old wives tale, but vets prefer to spay them mid cyclr, that is 3 months after a season. Your bitch may not come into season for another 3 months or more - tyhe bigger the dog, the later it is. A few days before she will start weeing more than usual and eventually you will notice a few spots of blood. Its not usually too bad, just keep a damp mop handy and confine her to the kitchen when she is indoors. Her season will last14-21 days and she will be fertile from around day 10 for about 7-10 days. Don't walk her off lead, and if possible walk her away from other dogs as otherwise every mutt in the neighbourhood will follow you home. Many on season bitches feel a bit like we do, and go off their food and exercise routines, so you may find she doesn't want as much exercise as usual anyway. It will be fine - if you are due to have baby in 3 weeks you could be confined to barracks together! HTH
