Is it fleas? What should I do?

I have one indoor cat and I think he has fleas. First noticed in the bathroom window specks of blood. Now I've noticed he's scratching and I've just groomed him and theres more specks of blood and black bits.
Would this definitely be fleas? Should I take him to the vets or buy a flea treatment like frontline?

Sounds like fleas to me!

I would take him to the vets to get a check over, just to be safe. They'll be able to prescribe you something much better than frontline and will recommend you a house spray too, which also needs doing if you are going to clear the problem.

Sounds like fleas. We had an infestation last year and what worked for us:

  • the six-month injection for the cat (can't remember what it's called but it means any fleas that bite her are rendered infertile; pricey but worth it if you can afford it)
  • RIP fleas spray (did the whole house)
  • hoovering most days if possible (a complete bore but house had never looked better)
  • daily combing of the cat
-patience. The spray didn't kill the fleas that were in pupae stage. so we had to respray a couple of months later.

Good luck.

Just realised he's an indoor cat - maybe it isn't fleas after all? How would he have picked them up?

Fleas can still get indoors, but it shouldn't be too severe. Get some frontline, especially if he never goes out. Also Johnsons house spray is good, do them close together, within a day or so, otherwise they'll switch between cat and floor. I have 9 cats, 5 out, 4 in and this combo works for us.
