Travel with a tortoise

We've been thinking about getting a tortoise for a while now but have been waiting for the garden to be sorted and the DSs to get a bit older. We have outdoor and indoor space earmarked and are quite happy with the amount and type of care they need.

The only thing now is finding out how happy they are with travel! We live a long way from relatives and camp away a few weekends a year with a two week camp in Europe in the summer. We're perfectly happy to take a run with us just so long as a tortoise would be happy to come along too!

So, does anyone have any experience of travelling with a tortoise or should we be staying pet free?

We once took our childhoods tortoise to the west country . tbh I think he found the journey pretty stressful .

Can you get a pet passport for a tortoise?

From what I can gather so long as you have a CITES certificate there are no restrictions.
Maybe if we got them used to travel early on then it would be alright?

We're looking after a friend's tortoises while he's on honeymoon, the DDs are really, really excited about it. I'm sure you'll find no end of people willing to volunteer to look after him (DSs' friends maybe?) while you're on holiday, it's not like they need walking for miles or pee all over the carpet or anything.

I'd love a tortoise but I worry about what would happen to it after I croak.
