Do animals have the same blood group types as humans??

My dog has undergone a blood transfusion today due to an accident and was just wondering??

This is interesting. Can I just sidetrack and ask anyone who knows..is it lethal to give a human the wrong blood group or is it just preferable that they receive a compatible one? I've always wondered.
