Hi, I know this is a strange one but I have a 12 yo whippet who has over the last week or so became so dizzy (i am assuming) that she now cant stand up alone. We have an appointment for the vets in the morning but since she has been in the family for such a long time I am worrying, does anyone know of this. All advise welcome, even if its bad. She did have a nasty bump to the head about 6 months ago. Thanks

What news, Singyswife....I have been worrying about your wee dog. How did you get on at the vets this morning?

1Baby1Bump · 22/08/2006 22:33

if you are still around i have my magic book out. i need to ask you a bunch of questions tho...

helooo?

1Baby1Bump · 22/08/2006 22:39

magic book says:
balance is controlled by canals in inner ear and part of brain called cerebellum. injuries, infections, inflammations and tumours in these areas will make a dog unsteady on its feet, as can certain drugs.

there is a flow chart also where you answer yes or no to certain questions then it tells you how quickly u should see the vet.

looking at the chart if it has happened gradually, it is not an emergency, it says to contact vet for advice but thats not to say its not something nasty. but thats only this book. it's called 'whats wrong with my dog?' by dr bruce fogle in association with rspca.
if they thought it was bad they would have asked you to bring her straight away.

let me know, i'll watch this one. x

Hello, Thank you for your concern and help however, sorry to say this but I took my dog to the vet and she had to be put down. Am really upset, more than I thought I would be. Turns out she had been bleeding in the brain since she banged into the lamp-post and it was bleeding badly now. My poor wee dog. I always say to people "its only a dog" but I am so upset that I can see now that it must be more than that. Once again, thanks for the concern.

Oh dear, Singyswife, I did wonder if it wasn't good news when we didn't hear from you. I'm so sorry and thinking of you. And you're right, of course, there's no way she was 'just a dog' when she'd been part of your lives for 12 years.
