Should I shave his tail fur?

My Persian 'Fursian' came to us as a stray.

He's lovely, but a LOT of work.

He doesn't like to let me comb his tail, but it's full of matts!

Ought I to shave it - I use a pet trimmer on his bum once a month - or try to comb the matts out?

could you get him all relaxed on your lap in front of the tv in the evening and be working on it gradually? my cats not longhair but he's a bit of a scabby tom and he loves to sit on my lap and have me groom him and unmatt his fur and clean him up. he finds it relaxing and so do i... much better than fighting about it in the middle of the afternoon

Could you cut the most matted bits out with nail scissors whilst he is relaxing on your lap?
VERY difficult to comb matts out once they are there-for you and him

at the vets they clipper then comb last few matts - less painful
