prob tell u to put him on chicken and rice, maybe give you somethign to rehydrate him. That's what happened when ours got s&d.

2labs · 11/07/2006 11:07

If he won't drink they will be concerned to fix that and get fluids into him somehow as soon as possible. Definitely a trip to the vet.

trace2 · 11/07/2006 11:08

but he wont eat at all, and whats s&d?

how long since he last ate. ideally vet will tell you to starve him for minimum 24 hours and then feed him little and often with chicken and rice. How's his tummy, if you apply pressure is it painful? esp at the rront by his rigs? s&d with no appetite can be indicative of pancreatitis which can take longer to heal and in reality the only cure for it is starvation.

if he's not drinking they may well take him in and put him on a drip. my dog had pancreatitis last year and she wouldn't eat. she's a lab and has never not eaten, not ever, so as you can imagine this was of some concern to me. she spent best part of a week on a drip had an endoscopy, x-ray and something else which I can't remember and which I mercifully didn't have to pay the bill for. She also had a bacteria (can't remember the name) which was treated with a two week course of antibiotics and antacids. since then she's had a much weaker digestive system. I had to change her food from yewkenuba to james wellbeloved and she can't have too much of anything that isn't very light. she's 11.5 though so is relatively old.

wannaBe1974 · 11/07/2006 11:17

trace is there any chance he's eaten something? a toy? swallowed a small ball? eaten something untoward when he's been out?

2labs · 11/07/2006 11:17

you've done the right thing - not eating is not so much of an immediate problem, but lack of fluids is. my dog had a stomach bug a while ago and was throwing up everything, including water - vet put her on a drip for 24hrs and luckily she was fine after that.

wannaBe1974 · 11/07/2006 11:17

wannaBe1974 · 11/07/2006 11:19

can you try putting some water in a surringe and giving it to him that way? if you do it slowly he should take some.

trace2 · 11/07/2006 11:21

will do, i just feel so sorry for him

OP posts:
wannaBe1974 · 11/07/2006 11:24

only give one surringe at first, if he keeps it down for more than 15 minutes give him a bit more. always leave time between surringefuls of water to allow for them to be absorbed. anything that's kept down for 15 minutes will be absorbed, but it's important not to fill his tummy up with water.

trace2 · 11/07/2006 14:50

they kept him it to drip, befor we went he was bleeding from is back pasage, i was told to becare as if its a bug we could catch it( thats all i need now am pg)

OP posts:
lewsmummy · 12/07/2006 17:11

Wot that last bit.

lewsmummy · 12/07/2006 17:12

I know its hard not to but try not to worry too much and make urself ill.

vnmum · 12/07/2006 17:27

it could be colitis which can be treated with medications and diet changes but it could also be an infection which can cause blood in diarrhea. are his vaccinations up to date?

trace2 · 12/07/2006 17:36

yes
