Ooh, where do I start Grin One local pet shop (in a garden centre) is absolutely atrocious. Bad points are; more concern with profit than animal welfare; lots of species on sale that are not suitable for the average Joe; lots of species on sale that the local animal shelter is bursting at the seams with (rabbits mainly); crappy 'advice' from pet shop staff.

I don't generally go to a pet shop, but there is a really good aquatic shop near me where the staff are very knowledgeable, they will take the time to talk to you about your fish and offer suggestions and further reading.

Don't sell animals that you don't know anything about would be my tip! Also don't sell things that are not suitable for the purpose they are intended, such as those poxy tiny little rabbit hutches and tiny fish tanks.

Loving animals is not enough though, you need to know all about them. Some types of animals like reptiles, inverts and fish need very specialist care.

I love the one I go to, mostly because:

  • It's small and local
  • The owner runs it (and knows my name and the names of my 4 dogs)
  • It is always immaculately clean
  • It doesn't have that weird pet shop smell
  • She'll order products that customers request/suggest
  • She keeps very, very few animals in. She can order virtually anything, but gives customers a bit of time between them placing a deposit and her placing the order, in case they change their mind.

That one sounds good

I love animals and know all about them too ( ive got 51 pets!)
Thanks everyone
