I read somewhere on an another parenting website that there's a safer flea treatment which only starts becoming active inside the flea, rather than on the pet itself. Has anyone tried this?

Well Frontline is a chitin inhibitor dogs and cats don't have chitin as they don't have an Exoskeleton so it doesn't affect them.

Again moxedectin which is in many flea treatments binds to a glumate gated chloride channel that cats and dogs.
It's all in the marketing!

Actually I think it was in Your Cat magazine where they talked about something called bio-activation
