Best pet for me?

I've been with my partner 16 months and we've had 3 miscarriages. So we have decided we want a pet (easy option). We have wanted one for ages but have been pr-occupied.

Basically what do you think is the best pet for us?

We don't have our own house yet so live at my mums or his mums.
We can't have anything really fluffy or a dog because my brother is allergic and has asthma..

We don't have much to spend... Please help we really want one!!

Yes, but a cat will have to get used to two homes.

To be honest, OP, I'm not sure you should have a pet until you have a home.

If you dont have much to spend you should also think about what will happen if it is sick. How will you pay the vets bills? Will your mum bail you out? How will you cope with day to day feed/grooming/bedding bills? It would be better to wait until you are settled, then if you do get a cat or a dog, they wont have the disrution of moving again, and you wont have to worry about your brothers allergies. I dont think we know enough about your likes/dislikes to recommend a pet from the above.

How about an African pygmy hedgehog? The are amazing, I have 13. People are generally not allergic to them, they aren't skittish like rodents, they're so funny and cute to watch and if you spend list of time with them they are affectionate like little dogs!

Hedgehogs are not pets! How about a rat. I've had a couple of dumbo rats and they come out during the day, unlike a hamster, and are fun to train.

Gerbils are cute pets. They're quite wriggly and fast when handled, not docile like hamsters (well my dd's friend's one that we looked after). But so cute with funny little personalities. And, easy to look after, food, water, attention and we clean ours out every couple of weeks. All the books say they should be kept in pairs but our first one died after a few weeks and his cagemate lived happily solo.

I would second a white rat-or rather two white rats as is it cruel to keep them on their own. They are intelligent, love to interact, and you can form quite a bond with them. However-you say you stay at your brother's house and he has allergies-this may e a problem then-any furry animal.

A canary is easy to care for and if you get a male the singing brings a smile to your face.
