Where to get a kitten from?

Where would one get a kitten from-I really am not sure how to go about finding a 'mother cat'!? We've always had cats from the CPL in the past which have been great and have lived long and happy lives with us, but we would really love a kitten for once-we have no other pets currently.

Would vets know of cats locally who have had kittens? Or catteries?

When I was a little girl-one of my mum's friends's cats was pregnant and we chose one of those. We went and picked one at 2 weeks and then visited a couple of times before taking her home at 8 weeks. This is the sort of scenario I was envisioning (ie seeing the kitten with its mum and then choosing one, rather than being given an older kitten/cat from the CPL)-but I'm not sure how to go about it? We only want a moggie-not a pedigree!

What would be best?

You could try an animal shelter, they quite often get pregnant cats in and need to rehome the kittens. Otherwise just ask around friends and family if they know anyone with a pregnant cat.

our local vets has a notice board that people advertise if they have kittens

It is really the wrong time of year. Cats are seasonally poly oestrus and don't really cycle in the autumn and winter there maybe a few stragglers left, but really main kitten season is April and May.
