Cats and flea control

poppiesinaline · 02/03/2006 20:31

What do people use for flea control with their cats?

Up to very recently I used Frontline but it is so expensive and the vet won't just give more out over counter, I have to take cat in and then they charge a fee Angry

Any other brill ways to kill and keep the buggers away?

Fleas that is, not the cat!!! Grin

Oops - I sincerely apologise if I p*ssed you off, or any other vets on MN, it was an unguarded and unfair remark that I made off the cuff without thinking properly. I always was a loudmouth...
Rural=good City=bad is an oversimplification, and a generalisation, although a) I was trying not to hijack the thread more than I already had and b) I was trying not to sound like a sanctimonious cow (or more than I already had...) and was making a bit of a tongue in cheek remark (hence the Wink)to try and lighten the tone. If it came across badly (and it clearly did) then I really do apologise.

You're absolutely right that large animal vets can make very good money, but I do think that the potential to earn more is bigger in small than in farm (not just large) animal practice, particularly in farms run for profit, rather than hobby farmers (and that is not a pejorative term, just a differentiation between people who like to have 10 sheep and a cow for fun or to live off the land or because they breed pedigree animals, and those who make a living off it), and that's because of the profit margins that today's livestock farmers live by. However, I absolutely accept your point that it is not true that all small animal surgeries make more money/charge more unfairly/etc than large animal vets. Nor indeed that, even if they do make more money, does that mean that they care less about the animals. But, as I say, in my defense it was just a tongue in cheek remark (and I know they can be the most hurtful/insulting/thoughtless, I'm sorry)and not meant to be read that every single small animal city vet is an evil, nasty, uncaring vet - which is why I suggested Poppies shop around to find a surgery that suits her.

And FWIW since you asked, our last holiday was 2 years ago, our honeymoon, which I paid for because dh gets paid pennies. But that's because he's an assistant not a partner, and also because we made a lifestyle choice to move here. If we'd wanted money he'd have been a small animal vet in a city... Joke!! Joke!! Don't shoot me!

I really am sorry for my generalisation, which was sweeping, insulting and wrong. In an effort to try and not sound sanctimonious, I sounded....ooh just a bit sanctimonious! Perhaps I should just let dh do the vetting and I'll mind my own bunsiness. Then again...

Oh 2-happy, I was having a grumpy evening tbh
I work in a big city, but have actually been working in charities about 75% of my career.
i have worked for some pretty posh private vets too however and been a bit surprised at the prices.
I was just getting humpy because this is a public forum and didn't want people to get the wrong impression of vets in general really.
I saw chicogomum's issues re dentists too.
People seem to think that vets, dentists, drs etc seem to earn tons. I think barristers etc earn stcks more maybe i am wrong
I never did so far,,and as it seems nor does your dh Sad

I found it interesting that rural vets seem to think city vets make more money....
alot of the public seem to think that if you work for a chrity you care more about animals.
i used to locum for charity and work in vv posh clinic v close too...and didn't care an more or less about each case depening on where i was working!

Anyway, hi to you and no offence taken, was just feeling a bit picky I think Smile

Smile I was genuinely sorry, and ped off at myself for making sweeping generalisations, which usually irritates me in other people! I think it's easy to forget on MN that so many people read your threads that you do have to think before typing, and TBH engaging brain was never my forte! And, given dh's occupation, I should have more* sympathy than the next person for vets and any bad rap they get (though I did post initially to stick up for poppies vet!). So I shall try and be sure to think before I post in future! Smile

oops · 11/03/2006 10:06

no probs at all, Grin

i managed to upset somebody the same eve by being a bit too blunt...got caqlled sarky and told to get off my high horse Grin
which i did... Grin
am off for a npa now, went out last night and little ones got up at stupid o'clock this am. Dh has gone out shopping for socks for them this am...obviously scratching around for a reason to get out to starbucks too Smile
see you around on the boards.

Oh and poppies, do hope your cat is feeling better and the fleas are getting sorted.

This is a zombie thread (started way back in 2006!) which keeps getting resurrected by dodgy spammers, so we're closing it now.

Hopefully the fleas are long gone! Grin
