I have 3 cats & a dog. All need flea treatments. They normally get done every 6 weeks but it doesnt appear to be working all of a sudden :(

One cat is also feeding kittens. What can I use? What do you recommend?

Yes I Hoover. Lots.

We always use Stronghold, altho new vet gives us something else now, the name of which escapes me. You can only get them from the actual vet, not over the counter.

I'm not sure if it works for ticks but definitely for fleas
Cider vinegar - half fill the lid and put to the back of cats neck so it can't lick. I do it once monthly.
I've used it for 2 years now after the chemical stuff stopped working and so far i've not seen 1 flea.

Firstly for all the products on the market six weekly is not often enough you need to use them every 6 weeks. It is best to use a product that inhibits larvae in the carpets as well as live fleas. Current top two Seresto collar and Advocate.

I always used Stronghold, don't bother with Frontline, i (on the one occasion i used it) and lots of other MNers have found it doesn't work anymore.

Most spot on are to be used every 4 weeks.

I've never had a problem with frontline. The problem usually is because there are so many in the environment that they're just not dying quickly enough. The solution is a product that contains an Insect Growth Regulator, which interrupts the lifecycle.

When I got invaded by fleas, I washed everything that could fit in the washing machine, vacuumed everything else, sprayed the house liberally with Indorex and frontlined the animals and was fine within 24 hours. Was hard work though.

Good luck. Fleas are horrible!

Here's 2 tips for fleas.

  1. If you suspect you have fleas, or know you have them if you put a tea light thingy into a bowl of water so it floats, close the curtains in the room, turn off the light and making sure there are no fire hazards light the tea light. Leave the room for a bit, making sure theres no chance of burning the house down!! when you return you will find lots of the little fleas floating in the water.

  2. Buy yourself some decent flea treatments and sprays but NOT and i mean NOT from your local vet. Vets charge a lot for things whereas you can buy flea treatment and sprays online from companies such as www.buycatinsurance.co.uk via their medical supplies links.

There are an absolute nightmare but believe me once they have been eradicated it's fine. We have always used frontline and never had a problem, we only got fleas because someone IE: ME forgot to treat them.
