they'll start again soon enough, it's a winter thing with some hens.
Also, make sure they get plenty of mixed grain rather than layer pellets.

Don't know what people do nowadays but when my grandparents kept them they definitely didn't go to waste, iykwim. The technical term is "old broilers" I think!

I think they start laying again round about now don't they? Stop in octoberish/november and restart february IIRC.

Squarer · 09/02/2006 12:26

Ah yes, just as Geekgrrl suggested!

tbh we never killed any of our hens, even the ones who weren't laying much. We do kill our excess cockerels though because theyusually get dangerous and it's a rather gruesome and lengthy thing to do - takes about 2 hours per animal. It's easier to just go and buy an oven-ready chicken.

my dad used to kill our old ones.

we could nver bear to eat them though, always buried.
