dogs in season - any advise

stupid me, couldn't afford to get my dog spade until today (pay day), thought I had a good few weeks left until she had her first season so timing would be perfect.

Well this morning noticed she is bleeding, not alot. I have now cancelled the appointment I had booked for today and will not have to wait.

Has anyone got any advise on how to deal with this and how long do they bleed for. I am not looking forward to dealing with this and will have to make sure when walking her I don't come across any other dogs - what a fool I am

You have my sympathy, it's not fun. Bleeding can last 1-2 weeks, I never thought of it with my dog but I know a friend who succesfully used dispoable nappies when the dog was inside!

We had a bitch when I was a kid and I remember my mum used to get a spray to put on her so she could go for a walk without being harassed by male dogs. I don't know if people still do this though as we have had spayed bitches or dogs since those days.

thanks for the replies, I really wish I hadn't left it this long. I am walking her, and so far have not seen any other dogs, will have to make sure I cross the road. She was getting rather friendly with a teddy bear this afternoon Oh the responsibility !

when I was a student we had a bitch who would come on heat. we used an old pair of knickers (with hole cut for tail) and then stuck sanitary pads in! lol

but this was only in the house, when out we would take them off!

as students we did discuss using a tampon but no one was brave enough to put it in!!!

Golds, most vets believe its better to spay them after they have had their 1st season so don't feel too bad about it

2-3m after is the safest time coz the blood vessels reduce and less risks.

Be really really careful in the middle as someone else says around 10-14 days after it starts coz she will want to mate and it only takes one slip of the lead
