Why have ours not hatched?

What can I do to get the next batch to hatch?

We had loads hatch, then loads all died together a few weeks later!

Bit dissapointing really. At least we didn't have to buy extra food.

moondog · 17/01/2006 21:28

What do they look like???

Always wanted them when I was a kid.

SorenLorensen · 17/01/2006 21:32

Well, moondog, the box implies that they look like this . But the reality, sadly, is this .

moondog · 17/01/2006 21:40

They should be done by Trading Standards eh??!
Yuck-look like mosquito larvae (which I am very familiar with, having lived in a Malaria ridden part of the world for years!)

pussycatmomma · 17/01/2006 21:46

i always wondered what they were, thanks for link. They actually look like big plankton type stuff.

Ours lasted for ages, then turned cannibal and started eating each other. We also had babies!

The boys loved them, but I must admit I was quite relieved when the last one died.

You do have to keep them very warm though and they need lots of light.

tamum · 17/01/2006 22:23

We had success both times with sea monkeys, lasted several months, but none at all with triops. I can't think of what you can change really, apart from water quality?

Troutpout · 17/01/2006 23:25

God i hate these minging little buggers. Ds has had some before...and i told all and sundry that i hated them.

He got 2 sets this xmas. One is the size of Atlantis...and they are hatching as we speak

Skribble · 17/01/2006 23:27

I got DS the huge one too, I am desperate to get it started but we are lacking in flat surfaces to put the thing, its biggar than his fish tank.

PrettyCandles · 18/01/2006 13:48

Thanks, I did wonder whether it might be the temperature as our flat is quite cool, and the only space I found for the aquarium is on a table by a window without a radiator. I was considering getting ds a small trips kit for Xmas, but didn't. My db had the same idea though, but trust my db - he didn't get a conveniently sized small aquarium, but one the size of Manchester.

I wonder whether I could hatch them in a smaller bowl in a warmer place, and then transfer them to the Mancunian aquarium?

I asked about them at a local tropic fish shop, and they told me these things are bred for fishfood!

ha ha, like i said is just big plankton

GhostofChristmasNatt · 18/01/2006 15:38

I was devastated as a child when the sea monkeys did not look like pic on the box. Triops don't mislead but they are frighteningly ugly and then one morning you find them floating bellyup and your children have hysterics.
