I think you can find the feces? Also the holes they go in and out through?

If you have a friend with a good cat, or a friend with a terrier, either of which you can borrow, you should find out quite quick whether there are mice/rats ...

littlemissbossy · 05/01/2006 09:08

oh shit! I don't envy you blossom - hate mice and rats are even worse!
Are there any droppings - anywhere - check possible places of entry - the larger the droppings, the bigger the rodent.
Your local council may offer a pest control service - particularly if the problem is rats - but they'll probably charge you.
For mice, you can buy traps or other devices, I'll have a search for you - but if it's rats you need professionals to sort out the problem asap, remember they don't come in ones IYSWIM.

We had mice recently, I bought a couple of 50p traps, and set them overnight with a small piece of frankfurter. We caught them straight away.
Good Luck

Littlefish · 05/01/2006 09:17

I had to phone the council recently about the same problem. They recommended putting out a trap, baited with.....peanut butter!

Furball · 05/01/2006 09:20

Blimey, I'll keep my eye on this thread. The night before last we awoke with a gnorring sound in the attic! Yesterday I went out and bought some 'little nipper' mouse and a also a rat one. Dh is going to have to venture up in the loft again this evening to see if we've caught anything. Blooming thing was working it's way through our lights cables. How would it get into the roof? We are in a five year old detatched house.

littlemissbossy · 05/01/2006 09:21

furball, sorry to tell you this, but they can climb, even through gaps in the walls

blossom2 · 05/01/2006 09:22

we had mice in a second floor flat - they can get anywhere. Traps work and we got one of those things u plug in that emitt some sort of signal to deter pests. We got it off ebay and it worked great. if its indoors it is normally mice rather than rats.

RTKangaSantaMummy · 05/01/2006 16:18

We had rats in our other house, when we arrived just before christmas

we had had them before they came in to the space under the cuboards the rat man had left some posion down from last time they are blue blocks that look like dishwasher tablets

anyway the poison had gone but so had loads of crisps and quavers from the cupboard and loads of poos and wee in its place

Anyway DH cleaned it all up and we got the rat man from the council to come back

and he left us with 18 blocks of poison

1 block kills 4 rats

anyway a couple of days later all blocks had gone

They come and collect the food and take it back to store it and when it is all gone they return

we laid rat traps with the spring over thingy {larger versions of mouse traps}

we had set them with peanut butter, but they still went for the poison blocks - which are cereal based

Rat man said they couldn't resist MARS BARS so DH went to buy MARS BARS for the rats but as they had already taken all the poison and had all the crisps stashed away they didn't live long enough for the MARS BARS

so we have left the traps set just incase we have any more while we are up here

THE ONLY THING THAT RATS CAN'T CHEW IS STEEL OR SOLID GLASS

Previously they chewed through concrete to get in

we were told they are neophobic and so don't like new things

good luck

IMHO get the council in they don't charge and our RAT man is lovely and very posh

BTW we have 2 cats who were shut in the kitchen overnight but the RATS still came in

as they didn't have access to the room just the space under the units the cats were safe

RATS are NOT frightened by cats and will love to eat their dry food btw - our cats just have tinned so weren't sharing with them

our cats do catch mice etc but we haven't had them for years

Furball · 05/01/2006 20:14

Well, we caught one, so have put more traps up tonight. Feel a bit mean but at least it was quick for it.

RTKangaSantaMummy · 05/01/2006 20:19

Furball · 05/01/2006 20:55

The building we live in is i think fairly over run by critters - I think mice. they dont seem to like peanut butter - ?welsh mice have different tastes maybe

Thank goodness none in our flat (I hope!) all in the loft above - where we hang out washing - eek!

Furball · 06/01/2006 22:30

none last night, does that mean there isn't anymore?

dinny · 06/01/2006 22:50

we had the pest man round today as I opened a cupboard this morning and a mouse was in a frying pan. haven't eaten all day as feel sick.

feel VERY angry with our cat for being so totally useless....

RTKangaMummy · 06/01/2006 22:51

was it sitting there like in the fawlty towers episode

or dead?

yours may have gone or just eating the store of food they have taken

RTKangaMummy · 06/01/2006 22:53

we had to throw away 2 new baking tins cos of the rats

dinny · 06/01/2006 22:53

pest man said to cover toaster as mice would get in that for sure...

bossykate · 06/01/2006 22:55

when i was a student, my housemate once killed a mouse that had got trapped in our toaster. she didn't mean to kill it, it was just... breakfast time. eeeuuuggghh.

Aloha · 06/01/2006 22:56

Dh found two half-eaten mice in ds's jigsaw puzzle yesterday. Lovely.
