What to do when a cat dies?

Not something I can discuss with feline ears listening, but what exactly do you DO when a cat dies at home? Do you go to the vets? What if it is at night?

depends on if you want to bury it yourself or get it cremated i guess.

Not got a big garden and would worry about children digging her up! Do you just go into the vets or make an appointment? This has been looming for a while and I like to be prepared for the worst.

We helped my friend bury his cat in the garden. He dug a deep hole, put her in wrapped in a thin cotton cloth, covered her up then planted a bush over her. He put a couple of heavy stones on top to stop foxes. I read a poem, he said a few words and so did another friend.

This site has some very handy hints.

i think you should have a box and blanket ready somewhere, so you can wrap up poor puss when the time comes, then take her to the vet who will arrange to get rid of the body for you (soudsn awful,. but i dont know what they do with cats, our big dog was cremated as was too big for burial)

Ring the vets and ask them what their usual practice is.

Bear in mind that if you want a cremation and you want to be sure you only get your pet's ashes, you specify that you want your pet cremated individually. My sister used to work for a vet who used to have all the pets cremated together so the ashes you got were just symbolic rather than your pet's own.

Thanks for all the info and the link. Have changed cat food and she seems to be perking up a bit now. Not ill so much as old and sleeping a lot.
