now has dementia. At what point does one say "Enough is enough" - I don't have a clue.
He still looks wonderful and physically fit but.... have to watch him like a hawk or he simply forgets where he is , cries like a baby and pees on anything he recognises as a personal item.
So far 3 laptops , shoes, a Kindle and a photo album. Never on furniture or floor coverings but obviously becoming a real problem.
Vet has no answer to be honest.
Any advice ?

:( so sorry to hear this!! I/my family have had a several pets over my lifetime who have died in a myriad of exotic ways (sorry, probably not cheering you up here) but the closest comparison I can think of was our lovely little oriental cat who developed diabetes when she was about 10. She was ok for a year or more, but the trips to the vet became more and more frequent. Eventually we felt that she was going too far downhill at that stage and her quality of life was not good enough. Basically, we kind of knew it was time when we took her in.

So my advice would be to go by your gut. If you think his quality of life has passed a point that you are happy with, then it's time. That may not be immediate, and you don't need to make an decision right now if you're not happy with it - you sound very sensible, and you clearly have his best interests at heart. You will know when the balance tips.

I don't know if you have ever had to have a pet euthanised before, but I would like to reassure you that although it is, naturally, upsetting it is also very humane, and very quick.

Like you have had pets all my life but they have all been terminally ill before euthanasia .
Just feel really bad that I am starting to resent a much loved mog I suppose !
Thank you for your concern, much appreciated.
