Should I take my cat to the vet??

I have recently noticed that my cat is becoming very bald from his privates to his belly. He doesnt seem to be in pain as such but isnt to chuffed if you have a feel of the area (which I doubt he would if there wasnt a problem). He had a hernia as a kitten and I wonder if it could be related?

Vets are just soo expensive and my insurance is only £50 excess, so I could end up forking out at least £20 on nothing, if it is nothing lol. That doesnt sit too right with me :S He was just at the vet and I forked out £60 since he got a piece of grass stuck up his nose lol.

Anyway:

Little advise needed if your cat has had a similar experience etc etc.

I have had exspence of a cat that was very much bald all over her belly, bum and half her back legs. Turned out to be 'feline psychogenic alopecia' or Over grooming
A little Info
I would de-flea and worm and then start looking in to if it could be over grooming if it is then some times simple things you can get like cat nip and new toys that will help. Though in my experiences no matter what we tried she as ways over groomed a bit, so we had a happy healthy but patchy haired cat.

Thanks annieapple.

I eventually took to the vet as he started having urine problems (peeing blood poor thing) so the vet thinks it could be related. The skin seems to be fine etc but he can be a little stressed at times so will use cat nip a little more often :)
