goldfish, how often am i supposed to feed them?

my friend says once evry two days. the food packaging says three times a day. if i do it according to the box, then the water looks like brown runny sewer water very quickly and smells. so have to change the water every day.
what should i do? help please.

feed them once or twice a day, just the amount of food they will eat within a few minutes. You are overfeeding them.
it also depends how much you want them to grow. If you feed them every other day they will survive but prob not grow much.

DP tells me that goldfish will eat what you give them, even if they are not hungry. we have tropical fish and they only get fed every other day. and we read they can actually go two weeks without feeding!
