settling in a new puppy

We got a puppy on Saturday night, the first night she was OK, she woke me up early (5.30) but thats OK, Sunday and Monday same, but last night she was in a terrible pickle. She cried all night, dh said ignore her and she will soon give up and sleep, but she didn't, he is a heavy sleeper so it didn't effect him, but I only got 3 hours broken sleep.

Has anyone got any good tips I could try ? she has a bed with comfort toys around her, a covered hot water bottle for warmth and a clock that ticks.

she a cross between at Staffy and a golden retriever, 6 weeks old.

When I am in she is allowed to roam around the house, generally she doesn't go upstair as she can't get back down again.

If she is tired she quite often falls asleep on the marble hearth, if I go out, I shut her in the kitchen/conservatory it's quite a big room, so she has plenty of space.

Today when I went to pick the kids up from school, I left the radio on and she seemed OK

It seems harsh, but I'd say you have to leave her to cry. If you go and see her, she'll do the same thing again the next night - and cry for longer if necessary because she knows the attention is coming. My mother did this with a puppy we had years ago and she ended up with broken sleep for a year. My current dog (a year old today) slept in our room for the first two nights, then we moved him downstairs, leaving the kitchen door open (but barricaded) and the landing light on. Gradually we turned the light off and closed the door. He cried a little bit the first night, then the third night when downstairs, but we ignored this. After this, he was fine.

I would tend not to give her a slipper - because she won't be able to differentiate between HIS slipper and other slippers / shoes - and you won't have an unchewed pair in the house. If you wanted to give her something that smells of you, you could buy a soft toy (like those cushkie things for babies) or a little blanket, sleep with it, then give it her.

Feed him at night, that may help him sleep a bit better. Never go to her when she starts yaping other wise you are teaching her to yap louder to get your attention. I should last for a week and then seh will be fine.

PS. Have you tried a puppy cage, they may seem small but our dog trainer told us that smaller spaces make them feel more confident (provided it's not far too small, has to have enough place to lie down, stand up and turn but not big enough to do a poo on the side if YKWIM) HTH

You could try getting a plug in from the vets. It lets out a scent that reminds the puppy of its mother. This really calms them down. I use one when there are fireworks about and it calms my dog down brilliantly. You plug it in near where they sleep. It's called D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) and you can buy refills but you probably won't need to. Good luck.
