The cat next door was killed on the road today. He was in and out of our house all the time to play with our dog and I was so fond of him.I saw it happen out of the corner of my eye through the curtain,I though he was bird, flying low over the road, heard a bump ,and sent DH out to check if there was an injured bird ,as I was helping my toddler on the loo .It was the poor cat.DH came running back in to try and get an emergency vet and I ran out.A lovely woman had caught him in the road to stop him being hit by another car,and when I got to him he was on the pavement where she had lain him and was so horribly injured it was clear he would die.He did die,but he was alive for about five minutes in all and it was completely terrible.I have seen quite a few cats who have been run over and generally they have been quite unmarked but this was just dreadful and I can't get it out of my head.DH had to go and hose down the blood on the road and pavement so that our DDs and the little boy next door didn't see it.I have never seen anything so shocking before and I can't stop crying,I was just willing him to die as quickly as possible.I am hoping that he would have been too out of it to register much or be in extreme pain-it was impossible to tell.I'm so upset.

Oh that sounds so horrible. How traumatic for you all :(

I hope the poor thing didn't register what was going on.

that's the hope I'm clinging to.His pupil was dilated but that may have been shock. He was only around 18m old and had been hit by a car about 6m ago, pelvis fractured in several places but luckily survived and recovered well,he has seemed afraid of traffic ever since and stopped crossing the road, but in the last few weeks he started venturing over the road again. He had a great personality, very friendly and sociable and just a lovely cat.Sad.

Poor kitten :(

Have a glass of wine to calm your nerves at least.

Poor little cat Sad, how terrible for all of you.

The image is going to keep replaying over and over again I'm afraid. The only way I know how to come to terms with it is to find a better image of the cat to replace the horrible image. But, that will take time.
You are allowed to grieve the death of a pet, even if the pet didn't live with you, you clearly loved him very much. xxx

poor cat Sad thank goodness there was someone with him.

I completely understand how upset you and DH must be I have experienced something similar.

For what its worth it sounds like the poor little mite was not in pain. I could be wrong but I thought animals went into shock and did not feel pain.

Please try to take a little comfort from the fact that you, your DH and the other lady made sure that that dear little cat did not die alone and was surrounded by kind, loving people when he died.

thankyou for your kind messages.I couldn't sleep much last night as I was too upset,so today I am trying as suggested to think of happy moments with him rather than the horrors of yesterday. It was five-ten minutes from him being hit to him dying, but it seemed to last forever.I missed him this morning as he usually popped round to say hello,he was around our garden and house a lot as his owner is at work all day so we did get close to him.The little boy next door buried him yesterday evening and my dds are taking some flowers round later to put on the grave. My three year old was upset yesterday but she is too young to stay sad for long,my five year old is still sad today,so we are off to pick flowers together. He really was such a lovely cat.
