Guinea pigs with little bites?

Our guinea pig has what looks like bites all over him, although I am not sure. The are on his skin with blood on the top of them (about 6). We have checked the others and there is nothing on them. He does not seem to be himself. We have put him into another hutch on his own as a precaution. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be. We are all very worried

Sounds like he may have a mange - please call your vet and have him seen on Monday - should he easily treated if it is that. The others may well be fine.

where are the bites? could they be scratches? does he have any dandruff type stuff in his skin as well? a few ideas (but for more check guinea lynx) - could be mites under the skin making him itch and scratch himself, you can buy ivomectrin online for that. could be that the other guinea pigs have been biting him?

Hi thanks so much for your replies. Do you think it could be the other guinea pigs? As he seems much more withdrawn and everytime we approach the hutch and run he is alone which he has never been before. They were always very much a group previously.

where are the bites? poor guinea pig. it's probably more likely to be a skin infection of some kind = they're quite common. but they do have a go at each other sometimes. a full on fight though would be more head\mouth\ear injuries imo. if you check the guinealynx website or peter gurney website they give some good descriptions of skin problems that it might be. there are for example microscopic mites that you can't see and that live under the skin but are very painful and itchy so the guinea pig scratches and bites themselves a lot. you'd need to treat all the guinea pigs though. it's important to treat as it can be fatal. if you go to the vet and get ivomectrin, make sure you get enough for all of them. it's about twenty quid a bottle but it should treat all of them many times over. if he's feeling under the weather he will keep away from the others and they might well turf him out as well = it's survival of the fittest in the guinea pig world
