Stray cat/kittens in Languedoc (France) - advice

We own a holiday villa in the south of France which we rent out all summer. We have just been contacted by our local management company to say that a stray cat has had kittens in one of our sheds and what do we want to do about it!

They said that if they take them to the local vet then they would charge around 35 euros each to have them put to sleep. They've offered to drown them Shock but I can't allow that.

Does anybody know if there's an animal charity that could help or if there's a local animal shelter? My French is not good enough to have this sort of conversation over the phone and I'm in the UK.

I'd also like to ensure that the mother is helped as I don't want to add to the stray cat population. Sad

I've also posted this on the Living Overseas thread in the hope that somebody may have some advice.

Do you know anyone who does speak acceptable French to have the conversation for you? I found what I assume is the French animal protection charity www.spa.asso.fr/ so perhaps you could contact them for some help?
Good luck - hope they are all ok. Could the letting people not buy some food for the mother for now while you get something organised for them all to be moved to a shelter?

Where in the Languedoc?

If you type "refuges animaux" and your nearest town into www.pagesjaunes.fr, ticking the "a proximite" box, you should find the nearest SPA branch which should be able to help.

Will the management company agree to call them on your behalf?

Thanks for the responses. I found an animal refuge place (Arche de Noel) and my management company phoned them but they only deal with dogs - not interested in cats!

Current guests are feeding them but they'll be leaving next weekend so don't know whether the next guests will do so.

Really don't know what to do now. I'm worried that if they're just left then we'll have a lot of stray cats around the place.

We used to have a mobile home on a site in France and it was full of stray cats. Don't worry about them, they know how to survive and there is plenty of wild food around for them. I always used to feed them when we were there though. Last time we were there we heard a squealing coming out of the hedge, and found a kitten on the ground, cutest thing! My partner told me not to touch it or the mother would abandon it. Five minutes later mother had come to collect it. She was keeping them in the hedge. I fed them until we left. The eat frogs and newts and all sorts of things, so usually survive.
