no experience just wanted tro say he is lovely

purepurple · 01/08/2010 09:05

Thanks, he is lovely isn't he?
I am drawn to him because he is so ugly, he has a face like a hippo
According to wikipedia, these dogs are very loyal, don't shed much hair and don't bark a lot, except at strangers, so will make a good guard dog.

He is 4, so should be trained already. In the flesh he is more of a blue colour, very unusual.

I am used to willful. I work with 2 and 3 year olds in a day nursery. They know who's in charge.

No experience here either although one thing that comes to mind is that you have to be vigilant for skin problems owing to the wrinkles.

They're a breed with a history of herding and guarding as well as fighting but I have rarely come across tales of ill-tempered ones - though as I said my personal experience is zilch and my rescue experience of them very limited. Theoretically they should therefore be great all-rounders.

The rescue isn't one I know but a look at their website indicates that they are responsible and so I can only say let them guide you. Be honest with them (not saying you won't be but meaning don't put yourself in a position of promising something you can't do just because you've fallen in love with him as that can be a recipe for an unhappy owner and a dog which will "bounce" back to rescue). Ask as many questions as you need to, take your time, visit him as much as possible (most rescues will reserve a dog and encourage visits so you can bond and so any potential concerns can be noticed and dealt with), taking any other dog/s you have and DC with you.

And, bless ya for choosing to give a rescue dog a chance!

Good luck, I hope that it all goes perfectly.

He is lovely.
My sister has a shar pei cross, he is a year old and is very sweet. He isn't as wrinkly as Levi but does have a lot of excess skin!
He doesn't shed at all which is great.

Hope all goes well should

I'm fine, thanks, and have a new foster dog (on my profile). He's a "long term foster" because he's an epileptic 7 yo GSD but he's not going anywhere!

How are you and yours?

(And sorry for the hijack!)

Thanks everyone, Vallhala we have been thinking about getting a rescue dog for ages but didn't because everyone is out al day. We are moving house this week, practiacally next door to DD's school, so she can come home at dinnertime and see to it. DS now only works 5 hours a day and does weird shifts, so the dog won't be on his own too long.
kormachameleon we will defintely be getting pet insurance anyway
I am so excited, we've not had a dog for years.

We have a staffy cross shar pei and she is lovely, we rehomed her when she was about 8 weeks and is now about 1 and a half. Lovely temperament, very bouncy and lively though but extremely friendly and loves meeting people and dogs.

She is great with the children and also the cats, after having problems when she was younger with chasing the cats. She really is a lovely dog.
