Today I saw a bull with HUGE testicles

Each testicle was the size of a football. And they were hanging low.

Not being a country girl I was quite . Is this normal for a bull?

DH and I are still shaking our heads on wonder.

Lizcat- these are bulls for suckler herds then, not AI bulls you are testing?

I think I am right in saying they do thousands of calves from one AI bull in a year but the bull never gets chance to see a cow.

Mine are pedigree suckler boys producing finest certified Aberdeen Angus Beef as sold in Waitrose and Marks and spencers.
AI much more common on dairy herds as they like to used sexed semen and different breeds for different cows. For example Daisy pretty ordinary cow giving average yield gets beef bull of any sex, whereas Buttercup high yielder gets sexed female holstein semen to produce the next generation.

My Dad used to have a suckler herd and has used bulls (Aberdeen Angus) like the ones you test and also AI (Limousin). He used to say, AI was too much of a faff so he went with pedigree bulls instead.

Nothing with anything that looked like it had footballs though.
