I am thinking of getting a westie puppy. I have never had a puppy before and am looking for some tips about what I will need to know and what I should buy. Thanks.

Firstly go through the kennel club when you buy your puppy here This will give you a list of breeders who have puppies and you can use it to find breeders and go on a waiting list it will also give some information about the breeder and that they have stuck to breeding rules.

Don't hand money over the internet I nearly got had by a scam. The kennel club site I showed you will also give you information about different breeds. Also gives links to rescue centre's if you are interested in adopting a easier older dog.

I would decide which breed and then think about what you will need for that breed.

Thanks ladies. I never thought of the kennel club before. Excellent links too.

Kennel Club accreditation should be a sign of a responsible breeder, but sadly it isn't always. Get in touch with the breed club as well - for a popular dog like the Westie, there should be a branch near you. They'll know more about the local breeders individually and can give you sound puppy advice, as well as maybe suggesting calmer housetrained older dogs currently needing new homes.

My friend has an adorable Westie and another friend has her name on a waiting list from a Westie breeder. I always prefered big dogs but I am now converted! The Westie I know is full of energy, can walk for miles, is bright and sparky and very loving but not at all yappy. A lovely breed

Thanks wildfig. There are some lovely wee puppies available an hour from us.

Oxo- I always thought westies had a reputation for being yappy but my cousin has a lovely wee one too.
