If your cat has a litter tray, where do you keep it?

We are moving house soon and really looking forward to getting a cat. DH and I both had cats when we were kids, but neither had litter trays.

I've been reading lots, and went to the local cat rehoming place and they advise keeping cats in at night and having a litter tray. Not sure I like the idea, and don't know where to put it - other than it shouldn't be too near the cat's food. And anyway not sure I'd want it in the kitchen. Any advice gratefully received!!

Ours lives in the downstairs shower.

under the stairs, there is no door so she has constant access but its out the way, I wouldn't have one in the kitchen either.

My cat is out during the day and (theoretically!!) in at night, but no need for a litter tray. I think, if you're getting a grown cat and not a kitten, you'll possibly find the same thing. If it was a dog you wouldn't think of taking it out during the night would you?

Thank you! There is a downstairs loo under the stairs - I suppose it could go in there, it's just across the hall from the kitchen so I suppose that might work?

In the utility room which is off the downstairs hallway.

Good point stormy, this is all new to me you see. In the olden days when I was young, the cat just got put out at night and came in at breakfast time. No cat flap either. How times have changed! We also had a dog, and no we didn't have to let her out in the middle of the night.

In the dining room, which is not particularly nice, but it's the only suitable room - conservatory would feel more 'hygenic' but it gets SO hot in there it would be awful. It doesn't really get used though, as the cats now stay out at night. We didn't want them to, but the little sods managed to break out of their catflap when it was set to 'in only' and got locked out, so it's difficult to keep them in. Anyway, it's a covered tray, which if you have a cat which will use one is a more pleasant prospect than an open one.

We keep ours in the upstairs bathroom, shouldn't need one really but one of our cats has special needs, can't seems to manage to get outside....ahh well what can you do!

We have two cats who we've had from kittens and they don't have one. Sometimes they will meow to go out in the early morning but mostly they just hang on!

They love being out at night in the summer.

Ive witnessed my cat having a wee in my down stairs bathroom sink... grose

But, since I lost one of my cats, and there is only 1, Ive done away with the cat tray. She's out all day and comes in at bed time - when I feed her, and shut her in - and in the morning I let her out again.

(saying that, twice last week this routine got messed up by DP getting her in early and me not realising, resulting in muggins here cleaning up cat shit... revolting)

Dining room for ours but it gets moved before mealtimes. We got a covered one www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002201&langId=-1&search Terms=CAT+LOOso everything is contained and not scratched out all over the floor.

In the garage. Thhere is a catflap out the back of the garage, and a catflat for the internal door. Cats have the run of the house and are allowed in and out at all times.

If I didn't have a garage I would not have a litter tray in the house, and would keep it outside (did that in old house). Was fun when it rained but hey ho.
