This is not my petition, but saw it and thought it was interesting

We want the UK Government to mandate teaching about severe autism, non-verbal communication, sensory overload, and dysregulated behavior in the national PSHE curriculum.

Current school education often focuses on mild autism, leaving the public ignorant about severe, non-verbal autism and dysregulated behavior. This lack of awareness leads to judgment, misunderstanding, and distress when families use necessary protective holds during sensory crises in public. Educating students on severe autism, meltdown triggers, and non-verbal needs will build real understanding, end public stigma, and protect SEN families from hostility.

I can see why this could be useful. Better understanding of sensory overload, non-verbal communication and meltdowns could help children become more accepting and reduce the judgement families sometimes face. It would be good if the teaching covered the wide range of ways autism can present.

Little cheeky bump for the evening

This raises an important point about the gap between general autism awareness and understanding of more complex, high-support needs. Better education around non-verbal communication, sensory overload and dysregulation could help reduce stigma and improve public understanding of the challenges some SEN families face.
