I’ve created a petition for schools to mandate mental health training for at least one member of SLT, this would benefit students and make them feel safer!! currently struggling for signatures would really appreciate if y’all could sign or share it around!!

Petition: Mandate all schools in England to have an SLT member trained for mental health

Require all schools in England to have at least one member of their senior leadership team (SLT) dedicated to student mental health and wellbeing.

Schools aren't hospitals or GP surgeries.

Hard to imagine that any mental health training of SLTs would take them much beyond the understanding they should already have of pupils' wellbeing needs. It would likely be just the usual collection of buzz words and right think.

Pupils with mental health needs should use their GP surgery for access to actual mental health support, including professionals who can liaise with the school as needed. School itself is for education.

NO
school staff are educators
mental health care should be provided for by mental health care professionals-
more investment in Mental Healtj in schools teams MHST - yes
unrealistic expectations of teachers - no

Mental health care delivered by barely trained people is dangerous.
Start a petition for more funding for CAMHS and for more specialised professionals being employed there in preference to psychology first homogeneous teams

No I don't agree with this. You can't become an adviser on mental health by doing a course and ticking a box. It's a daft idea.

DefinitelyNotMaybe · 07/08/2026 20:55

Schools have a pastoral team for this.

This, is this so teachers can be held responsible for when things go wrong, in incidents such as Rudakubana
?

There's a dedicated topic for petitions.

I’m afraid I wouldn’t back this petition for the reasons previously stated. More funding for specialist MH support but it’s not the responsibility of teachers.

I agree. Teaching staff should teach.

I'm a grown adult who wouldn't go near the "Mental Health First Aiders" at work. No way would I want my child relying on one either.

Me too -mental first aid is great for a nice, supportive metaphorical head pat -
for real mental distress, or mental illness, give me a hard core mental health professional

We had physical punishment when I was at school - considered a terrible thing nowadays but at least we all toed the line, did as we were told and learned stuff. Everything’s so complex now. (And we all turned up)

FleurDeFleur · 08/08/2026 07:16

Secondary schools have pastoral teams. People in those teams have various levels of training to support students.
This kind of proposal will not help.
This petition will make no difference.
