Fully Repeal the Gender Recognition Act

The Government should repeal the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) 2004

We believe that the GRA 2004 was created on a basis of fore-grounding the personal autonomy, personal development and security of a very small minority of UK citizens. In so doing, we think it had the effect of diminishing and displacing the Human Rights, safety, autonomy and dignity of over 50% of the UK population - namely women. We therefore think that it needs now to be repealed.

Sorry to say I think the wording is terrible.

To get a meaningful number of signatories it needs to reach out to those outside a GC feminists who will understand the language.

Hopefully I will be proved wrong.

Sad

There was a very similar petition previously, which failed to collect sufficient signatures. I can't remember how that was worded, but I think it's hard to strike an ideal note - the petitions site only gives you a small space to write in and in practice, scrolling through the petitions there, I tend to find that I think they're badly written! It's just about supporting the underlying idea.

There was a previous petition (https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_notice-board/4688427-repeal-the-gra)it got 16,000 signatures and the response was that the government didn't see an issue with the GRA.
I think it should be gone but it would take A LOT of effort.

on a basis of fore-grounding the personal autonomy

This is total gobbledygook.

Given that opposition to trans women in sport has made huge advantages, How would anyone getting on with their daily life relate that issue to this nonsense phrase.

The point of a Parliament Petition is to reach out to as wider group as possible.

Not just virtue signal to a minority who might just have an idea of what the bizarre phrasing is actually about.

I have a memory of there once being something called the Plain English Campaign.

And this issue needs a plain straightforward statement.

POWNewcastleEastWallsend · 13/02/2025 02:04

I agree with previous comments about the wording.

However, someone has had the gumption to take the initiative so that's what we are stuck with and we will have to make the best of it 🤷‍♀️

I want replacement not just simple repeal. I am not sure simple repeal would provide the protection women need.
