Petitions and activism

People aren't going to click on a link without an explanation of what this is about.

MindHowYouGoes · 23/11/2023 20:47

That link says what constituency you’re in because you’ve signed it. Plus there’s a section on mn for petitions - this ain’t it

TwinkleTwinkleTwinkleTwinkle · 23/11/2023 20:47

You should explain it rather than providing a link that adds my signature without any further detail.

TwinkleTwinkleTwinkleTwinkle · 23/11/2023 20:49

I'm confused as to whether I have or I haven't signed actually.

Tbf I probably would have signed it, though I'm nowhere near 50k, I do aspire to be someday. V unlikely though!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 23/11/2023 20:49

well that appears to have added my signature to it just because I clicked on the link to see what it was about. That doesn’t seem right…

TwinkleTwinkleTwinkleTwinkle · 23/11/2023 20:51

Oh wait op I think that is your "you've signed it message". As you were!

The op has shared the link confirming they signed it, it’s not adding any signatures

Overthebow · 23/11/2023 20:57

I don't want to sign it, I don't like how it's worded.

Neriah · 23/11/2023 21:02

You should not be posting petitions unless in the petition area. So yes, YABU. And right now I have little interest in benefitting the better off when people are unable to pay their bills or buy food for their children. There's just been a lovely budget that yet again benefitted the wealthier in society at the expense of the poorer.

Heatwavenotify · 23/11/2023 21:06

Sorry it seems to have copied the link rather than the title I meant.
it was regarding increasing the threshold. Beside I saw it on another thread so not quite sure why it’s caused such fury.

It certainly isn’t about benefiting the rich at all @Neriah it’s about single parent households being unable to claim when two parent incomes can claim whilst earning nearly double.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/11/2023 21:06

Maybe people don't think it's unfair.

Heatwavenotify · 23/11/2023 21:07

@enchantedsquirrelwood so it isn’t unfair that a single parent can’t claim when a two income family can claim whilst earning nearly double? Ok then.

SaintJuliette · 23/11/2023 21:10

Agree with you OP and have signed.

It was grossly unfair when it was brought in, even more so now that the tax thresholds are catching ever more people.

When they first announced it, it was going to be a cliff edge at 50K. It was a huge deal to us at time with DP our only income at around £49k. We stood to lose all our child benefit for 2 kids. The tapering off thing was the their concession when people grumbled.

Headingforholidays · 23/11/2023 21:11

I agree, it should be household income. I can't claim either way but it doesn't seem right that some people who need it more are missing out.

oldfatandreadyforarevamp · 23/11/2023 21:11

This needs to be in petitions.

Exasperatednow · 23/11/2023 21:12

The current system is grossly unfair.

PercyMcPigface · 23/11/2023 21:14

But I don't think it should necessarily be based on household income. Yes, it's unfair on a single parent. But two parents working full time will also potentially need to pay for full time nursery. A couple with a stay at home parent doesn't. The simple fact is that it's just one of many things that are unfair and I won't be signing it.

Heatwavenotify · 23/11/2023 21:15

Fair enough it should go in petitions but I wasn’t actually asking for people to sign it. More surprised that in a cost of living crisis I was surprised that nothing is being to done to help single parents which are on the increase. That there wasn’t more support for this given it had been posted on mumsnet previously.

OP posts:
Heatwavenotify · 23/11/2023 21:18

@PercyMcPigface That’s your right not to sign it but you can’t equate two parents with one staying at home as remotely the same thing. A single parent has to pay for childcare as there is no option to leave a child at home with the other parent.

OP posts:
saltinesandcoffeecups · 23/11/2023 21:18

Maybe because signing petitions really does fuck all to change things.

If you feel this strongly about it, get your feet on the ground to do something tangible to affect change.

PercyMcPigface · 23/11/2023 21:23

But again it all comes down to circumstance surely? A single parent who is in that situation due to bereavement, yes. A single parent who has a partner no longer living with them - well why aren't the absent partner helping to contribute to nursery or other living costs?

Don't get me wrong, I couldn't be more supportive of people having the financial support they need. I believe T he whole system costs more to administrate / police than if they just made it a universal benefit and I think it was only brought in because people objected to the idea of the rich getting the benefit. So I'd sign a benefit saying it should become universal. I just think that you'd find there are all sorts of situations that are individual and that we shouldn't be stopping one set of people getting the benefit because on first appearances they seem better off

PercyMcPigface · 23/11/2023 21:24

Sign a petition, not sign a benefit. Can't edit on my phone.

TwinkleTwinkleTwinkleTwinkle · 23/11/2023 21:33

I've signed. The map is fascinating. Someone from almost every corner of Britain has signed.

Heatwavenotify · 23/11/2023 21:36

@PercyMcPigface I’m sure being on mumsnet you don’t really need to question why some parents don’t step up and contribute 50% of the cost of raising a child/children. It happens all the time. The minimum child maintenance rarely equates to half the costs of raising a child. Many hide their earnings. And some don’t pay at all.
