I posted this petition awhile ago on a separate thread and we got it up a few thousand. I’ve been watching the petition and we are now almost at the 10k signatures so this petition can be considered by the government. Can you help push it over the finish line?

It was started by Angela Burke who lost her daughter, Courtney Ellis to a dangerous driver:

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/623592

Courtney Ellis, 14, was run over by Brandon Turton, who was driving at 93mph in a 30mph zone, in September 2020. Her older sister who watched she was hit and killed by a speeding driver now "suffers daily" with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their mother, Angela Burke feels the seven-year driving ban is not enough and is campaigning for anyone who causes death by dangerous driving to receive a lifetime ban.

She said: "I don't want her death to have been for nothing. Imagine seeing the killer who is responsible for taking your child away from you in a horrific way driving around like nothing had happened, it's like rubbing it into my face. Driving is one of life's luxuries and it comes with rules and regulations so if this is abused in this way then this luxury should be taken away from them for life.

All I have left of my Courtney is a box of ashes, photos, her clothes, some of her hair, her handprint from the night she passed.”

Her petition has the support of many other grieving parents who have lost children due to dangerous driving as well:

This is such an important law we need to protect children from dangerous drivers- currently they can kill and be back driving around again. It’s lunacy.

Signed. It never made any sense to me being a 7 year ban, should of always been a lifetime ban and a FULL life time prison sentence if you murder someone through dangerous driving.

So close, at 9,960….only forty more signatures….😳

I will sign as soon as I’m home with better connection. I totally agree, I had to get out of the way yesterday from a Range Rover évoque that was acting like a racing driver - saw him twice in two days weaving aggressively through heavy afternoon traffic, racing off the lights in a cloud of fumes another time, literally a matter of time before he causes a serious accident where doubtless he’ll walk away.

Now that cars are so huge and powerful it is insane that these murderous bastards are ever allowed behind a wheel again.

Seeing drivers like that always frightens me too because it’s this gut feeling they’re not going to stop driving dangerously until they kill someone, and then even when their ban expires, they could just start driving dangerously again.

No, this is not going to get done, every case is different and it’s up to the court to decide the penalty

Onnabugeisha · 28/01/2023 13:29

Thank you everyone! It’s passed 10k signatures.

@Crazykatie it will still be up to the courts to decide. Right now they cannot hand down a lifetime ban no matter how dangerous the driver is because of the upper limit in the sentencing guidelines. We are asking the Government to amend the law so that courts can decide to hand down a lifetime driving ban.

This is something that really scares me as a driver. The amount of people that just pull out, forcing you to slam your brakes on or just walk across the road expecting you to stop, terrifies me.

I was once charged with dangerous driving (but allowed not to be if I did a course) because the driver in front slammed their brakes on just over the brow of a steep hill. If that driver had died, should I have gone to prison for life?

It is scary, completely understand. Only last week at dusk I was at a crossing and had pushed the button for the green man. A group of teens sauntered up on the other side of the road and one of them didn’t pause, he just sauntered into the road. A car almost hit him…screeching brakes and horn blaring. The teen stopped, smirked, flipped the v at the driver and kept crossing. I was stood there thinking if he’d been hit damn right I’d be telling the police it wasn’t the drivers fault. We are saving up for a dash cam for exactly this reason…some kids think it’s funny to risk their lives.

The petition is to give the courts discretion to hand down a lifetime ban in the most obvious offences…the driver that killed Courtney was going 93mph in 30mph zone past a park where children were playing. All Courtney did was start crossing the road to leave the park. There’s no way she could have seen him coming at 93mph.

It would not be an automatic lifetime driving ban, but it would be an option for the courts to consider when it was no accident.

I don’t agree with life in prison for dangerous driving unless the car was literally used as a murder weapon- and I think the law already distinguishes between the two.
