Petition for fully vaccinated UK citizens arriving from red list to have home quarantine.
Some people need to travel for business, visiting family. Hotel quarantine facilities is s**t and can’t keep it forever as vaccines are proving to be effective.

The risk is so high though that hotel seems the only way to ensure people don't go out and about? I agree the conditions are terrible though. Should this be the focus of petition, to improve standards?

omegabetaxx · 22/06/2021 11:28

Agree. But staying in one room for 10 days without even access to garden poses health risk,
If u are fully vaccinated with per test negative and regular testing and home isolation of entire household will reduce the risk.

We all know what happens when you travel to places with such high levels of Covid. First of all you’d have to be very desperate and secondly you should accept that when you return you have to quarantine for 10 days in a hotel. No exceptions.

Whether you’re double, triple or quadruple vaxxed is irrelevant because Red countries are breading grounds for VOC that could damage our vaccine efforts. You can not trust the public to follow the guidance, too much is at stake.

Is that really too hard to grasp?

TBH the UK arrangement isn't great but it is replicated in other parts of the world and in some countries it's actually a fair bit more basic.

Sadly you've only got to read some other posts in this place to understand why home isolation of the entire household probably won't work, ( typically "just go out for a walk late at night, you won't meet anybody")

Other objections to home quarantine would be the logistical issue of transporting the arriving passenger possibly hundreds of miles from the arriving port to their home without risking breaking quarantine, provision of food/supplies for a whole family for 10 days plus.

I do agree with PandemicPalava's comment that maybe the effort should go into improving the existing system.

PandemicPalava · 22/06/2021 11:59

Pleased to see other people see the point of the hotel quarantine! The logistics of transporting people poses a massive risk, plus if they've just come back from a trip, they won't have food in a lot of cases so will need to shop. At least in the hotels a basic level of care can be provided, food etc. If the conditions are really bad then it needs to be documented by the people in there and then this evidence used to put forward a case for improvements.

As another poster said, people are aware of this before they travel.

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/06/2021 12:04

@omegabetaxx But staying in one room for 10 days without even access to garden poses health risk, don’t be ridiculous it’s ten days.

Hollywhiskey · 22/06/2021 12:09

Nope, there are undoubtedly already exemptions for those the nation needs out of quarantine such as medics or scientists or lorry drivers with essential immediate work to do.
Otherwise I would like to see the red list system tightened up so you can't just go via amber countries spreading variants around the world that way.

omegabetaxx · 22/06/2021 12:14

We have to live with Covid for foreseeable future. Do you expect hotel quarantine forever.???
We need to improve quarantine measures from countries with VoC and allow monitored free travel for rest of the countries.

Remember even amber countries are not safe. VOC can originate anywhere in the world.Do we stop travel forever. Uk says it has superb genomic seq and testing it didn’t stop Us from generating and spread Alpha variant and spread of delta.

We can use tracked wristbands for home quarantine for fully vaccinated arriving from red list and huge fines for breaking rules. Even for hotel quarantine hotel transit is needed. It’s not a special case for home quarantine.

@Thewiseoneincognito Yes. I’m desperate to see my family. The virus is here to stay. Do you expect people not be meet their family till the virus is here ? If the country a person is travelling from has a vaccine resistant variant then hotel quarantine for fully vaccinated is needed else we need a system for home quarantine and cheap and effective testing.

Other countries eg Germany allow those from virus variant areas to do the 14 day quarantine at home. They follow up regularly with proper conversations with the local health authorities - not just a hapless student reading out the same script every day.

They seem to be better at managing Covid than UK so perhaps we could look at how they do it.

lurker101 · 22/06/2021 12:20

This is a dreadful idea, and one of the reasons I believe the Kent variant took off in India before the Delta variant took hold.
OP if you want to go to a red list country and not do hotel quarantine on the way back, take a route through an amber list country and do the requisite 10 days there - as I understand it a number of the Indian Cricket team/staff currently in Southampton spent time in Serbia for this reason and were then able to enter from amber country requiring only 5 days TTR.
