YANBU - It's not just the police either. The press guidelines say that the media should report crimes committed by transwomen (interpreted as any male who says they identify as a woman) as being committed by women and (except in very limited circumstances) not even mention that they are trans.
Take, for example, this story of a male with a history of abusing children who posed as a teenage girl online to groom children:

It is acknowledged that they made up the bit about being a teenager in order to groom the boys but of course sex offenders wouldn't lie about being a woman so that part must be taken seriously.
And, no, that article doesn't even mention that Jasmine is male, you only find that out in a story where it is "relevant" (ie where they are lying about being raped to try to get transferred to a women's prison):
