Why is it more difficult for some children to learn how to read?

Have you ever wondered why it’s more difficult for some children to learn how to read? And why some words are harder to read than others?

We are ReadOxford,a group of scientists from Oxford University and we want to find out, so we created Word Detective: an animated word decision game.

It’s a simple game, taking only a few minutes for each child. By adding responses from 5000 children, sampling across 8000 words, we will discover how well words are known by 5-16 year olds.

Word Detective can be played online from 29th June. Children will enjoy the animated game, practise reading and contribute to a national science project all at the same time.

To play Word Detective visit the Oxford Owl Summer Fun website at:-

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Mumsnet. Two boys,(8 and 14). My eldest found reading difficult and this was part of my inspiration to retrain as a psychologist looking at why children struggle in the classroom. I'm currently working at Oxford Uni where we've just launched a project to find more out about how reading develops. It's a 3 minute fun word quiz and we need 1000's of children to help us by taking part. See how many words your child knows! Thank you!
