Why is it Father's Day and not Fathers' Day?

That's it really. I'm sure there must be a good explanation, but I am confused.

Surely it's a day to celebrate all fathers, not just one?

Thanks.

Maybe because most of us only have one father?? So you are celebrating him not anyone elses!! (I personally only get my dad one and and my DCs only do one for their dad, we don't go in for all that "happy father's day Grandad/Uncle/whoever" - seems like a marketing ploy by the card manufacturers!)

Well it's always Mother's Day, isn't it? Not that that is any more logical, just mentioning it.

squeaver · 15/06/2010 14:04

Oh it drives me mad. There's more than one bloody father in the world, therefore it should be Fathers' Day.

Same with Mother's Day.

And Seasons Greetings.

I agree with childofthe70's.

I am only celebrating my father's day.

strongblackcoffee · 15/06/2010 20:19

I'm very interested

I came on mumsnet specifically to post the question - I'm just about to make up 50 preschool fingerprint keyrings, and I wanted to check if it really was definitely right to put father's

ridiculous if you ask me... there are many fathers...

UnquietDad · 15/06/2010 20:24

Don't ask me. Why isn't it Fathering Sunday?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 15/06/2010 20:48

Most of us have one father and one mother. I am not celebrating all the fathers/mothers in the world, I am celebrating mine. And I expect the DC's to jolly well concentrate on me (Mother's Day) rather than fart around thinking about billions of other people (Mothers' Day).
