Punctuation and footnotes- style guide? Any academics or editors online?

Not so much a rant as a question for you sharp-eyed people.

In a formal text such as an academic text, you do place the footnote numbering after the punctuation, don't you? so text1, rather than text,1 (sorry, no idea how to do superscript in Firefox) I've just translated 25000 words with it the other way, and am beginning to doubt myself.

Yes, after the punctuation. Unless it's a spaced dash. (text1 - )
