Is it?

"No inadequate teaching was seen on the visit and there was much
good and better teaching."

It's certainly clumsy.

There was evidence of good and very good teaching.

TeamEdwardsSparklyBaubles · 22/12/2009 22:10

Well, "inadequate" and "good" are classifications in teaching standards, so it does make sense if read in that context.
Doesn't it?

TeamEdwardsSparklyBaubles · 22/12/2009 22:11

The don't classify "very good"
It's inadequate, satisfactory, good or outstanding.

MyCatHasARedderNoseThanRudolph · 22/12/2009 22:12

Better teaching? I'm assuming there is somewhere previously stating that the teaching was bad?

TeamEdwardsSparklyBaubles · 22/12/2009 22:15

I'm reading it as "There was good teaching, and teaching that was better than good, but not quite of outstanding standard"

Hassled · 22/12/2009 22:17

Exactly - they couldn't say "Very good", they couldn't say "Outstanding", but yet there is teaching that is better than "good". Hence the clumsiness. It's madness .

SantaIsMyLoveSlave · 22/12/2009 22:20

I'd probably have gone for "No inadequate teaching was seen on the visit and much of the teaching observed was good or better."

I think it's the "good and better" that's throwing the whole thing off -- each lesson observed will be good or better than good, not good and better than good.

RustyBear · 22/12/2009 22:22

Perhaps they meant the teaching was better than the standard required for 'good', but they couldn't grade it 'outstanding' - someone said on another recent thread that they could only grade a lesson 'outstanding' if they'd seen at least 20(?) minutes of it.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 22/12/2009 22:42

I think they meant the teaching was better than when they did their last inspection as previously the school was given a notice to improve.

The whole report seems to be very badly written with random commas in places where I'm sure they shouldn't be.
