Saw this on T-shirt in supermarket yesterday. Churchill would be turning in his grave.

I'm not sure t-shirts of that calibre are referencing Churchill. I think it's more likely to be a reflection on 'beer googles' making ugly people seem more attractive. A person who is ugly even when you are drunk must be very ugly indeed.

Eek, did you have an urge to grab a marker pen and correct?

Tortington · 03/08/2009 20:47

pmsl @this being explained

Hassled · 03/08/2009 20:49

It's a bit of both. The Churchill quote is

Yes, madam, I am drunk. But in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.
-- (replying to Lady Astor's comment 'Sir, you're drunk!')

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 03/08/2009 20:49

Plenty of people type your instead of you're on here too..

Lilymaid · 03/08/2009 20:55

The original - though there seems to be many versions was:
Bessie Braddock: ?Sir, you are drunk.?
Churchill: ?Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.?
(Bessie Braddock was a very fat Liverpool Labour MP)
Some people ascribe the quotation to Nancy Astor, but she wasn't ugly. One of her spats with Churchill was:
Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison.?
Churchill: ?If I were your husband I would take it.?

Thanks everyone - I know the original Churchill quote and was just trying to raise the level of the allusion above the obvious gutter of the ingenuity behind the item itself.

Just depressing: even if it were made in China by machines programmes by people who don't read English, that's no excuse for the person who actually bought it.
