Pedants' corner

Do you think a city museum should do better than this?

Took the dcs to the city centre museum today. They have a really good exhibition up of all the decades of the 20th century, with clothes, toys, appliances etc. Thing is, and this kind of spoilt it for me but I know it is because I am ultra pedantic and not many others would notice, let alone be bothered...the whole thing is titled 'You're History.' Yes, as in You Are History. WTF? Thing is, it was all over the wall, all over the publicity, everything. 'You're History...a look through the years at our heritage.'

So, would anyone else get overly annoyed about this? Should I point the mistake out to the museum, and thus ask them to change all their displays and publicity??
Or have I missed something and being thick??

Are you sure it was not on purpose? Like you are part of history and here it is? I find it hard to believe it was a mistake on such a large scale.

erm, I would have read it as meaning You Are History - as in the recent past is history too. Seems fine to me!

I work in a museum and we would never get away with that. Things are checked and double checked before they go on show to the public and anything that slips through is pulled up super speedily! We also aren't allowed to use abbreviations so we would have had to put You Are History. Seems like it was deliberate to me, just not very well thought out.

Yes I know what you mean but it was the way the rest of the slogan was headed - ie 'this is our history.' It seemed to not go alongside...I did consider this and it didn't seem to fit.
However, I may well be wrong, I often am, lol

there is of course also the unfortunate secondary meaning of 'you're history' which I'm not sure they have considered

NO good for me....

Nah nah nanana

I'll get my coat.

I'd have thought they were showing how you are part of history, and that in 100 years everything we now think of as cutting edge will be pointed at and laughed about (think 1980s mobile phones!!)

UnquietDad · 16/02/2009 21:56

Surely it means "You Are History", as in history is made by people?

It would have had me humming a 1989 Shakespeare's Sister hit all round the museum, thouih.

BarcodeZebra · 16/02/2009 22:06

From that to Carrie and David's Popshop. What a come down.

SixSpot · 16/02/2009 22:12

I'm sure they meant "You are history".

Calling it "Your History" would just be so boring.
