I suspect a lot of meteorologists are also pedants. Symbols on maps and the placing of apostrophes, don't you think they occupy a similar corner of the brain?

A snowy day is just an ordinary day with snow, like a rainy day or a sunny day. Surely what they OP is hoping for is a snow day, which is an Americanism for a day when it's too snowy to go to school or work. You could get all pedantic about the OP using an Americanism if you want.
