Have / Do - DH driving me mad and now DD's doing it too.

Surely I must be right?

Today dh was talking to dd whilst getting ready to change her nappy and said 'do we have some poo in our nappy?' - yes we do.

This drives me mad - surely it should be 'Have we got some poo in our nappy?' - 'yes we have(got some)'

Awful example I know but DH uses this all of the time and now my two girls do as well.

I can't explain the grammatical reasons why it's wrong but it just must be.

And whilst we're at it - it's so cold today it feels like the 'Artic' - it's the effing Arctic I believe.

Why the plural form? Were they sharing a nappy?

The word "do" links to "does" which is connected to verbs/actions etc.

The word "have" is to do with possession.

Have is correct. Have we got poo in our nappy? Do we poo in our nappy? Completely different meanings.

And a very good point from CatWithKittens - why are you sharing a nappy - surely you must be potty trained by now!!!

As for the Artic - aren't they those bloody great big trucks?

Sorry but I'd say you're wrong. As well as being a verb in its own right, 'do' can be used to form questions (regardless if the question is about doing something). That's to say, "Do you have the time?" is as valid as "Have you got the time?" and the correct answer to the former would be "yes, I do/no, I don't".

Have you pooed in your nappy?

Do you have poo in your nappy?

I don't know anymore.
Surely the smell would give it away!

Ok, let's ignore the irritating use of the plural.

"Have you got poo in your nappy?"
"Yes I have" (got poo in my nappy)

"Do you have poo in your nappy?"
"Yes, I do" (have poo in my nappy)

Surely, it's being consistent that's important i.e. don't answer "have" when the question is "do" iyswim.

I'm sure someone else will come along with a definitive reply.

What would probably annoy me even more is your husband's use of the word "our". Does he also wear a nappy?

I agree with you Squeaver. What my dh does though, (very irritating) is to answer "Yes I do" when you ask him a "Have you got?" question.

Nearly as bad as "can I get?" when ordering in cafes etc. Don't start me.

What really annoys me is the use of "gotten" as the past participle of "get". I know it's correct in America but it's not correct here (although I read somewhere that it used to be correct here several centuries ago...) and it really irritates me when I hear Brits use it. But that's another rant for another day. Let's get back to the poo in the nappy issue I agree with squeaver (who agrees with me ) I think it's important to be consistent but I don't think it's wrong to use do in relation to the do-do.

I notice they say it a lot in Australian soaps (not usually involving nappies however....).

I think both ok, but 'Have you got' is more usual and natural for me.

you've made me giggle with all of this talk about the nappy thing - I think dh was being all cute and fatherly with dd and I guess I should be pleased that he always does the stinky nappies when he's home.

But do agree with people here - I think it is something more often heard in Australia or the USA. I think he's been watching too much Neighbours on TV.

DW's family talk about "Arctic" lorries. She think it is rude to correct them and so I am not allowed.
