Do you pronounce tube as toob or choob?
And Tuesday as toosday or choosday.
And duty as dooty or jooty?

Or do them pronounce them differently?
How are they supposed to be pronounced?

what seeker said. I too am quite posh.

PrettyCandles · 23/09/2008 14:12

No, Americans would say Toob, Toosday, Dooty, rather than Tyoob, Tyoosday, Dyooty.

poppyknot · 23/09/2008 14:13

Transliterate, this is, am and accused.

Ooops for poor typing in Pedants' Corner.

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2008 14:14

Like seeker - so I musy be posh too!

HuwEdwards · 23/09/2008 14:15

what seeker said - however I am as common as muck

Iklboo · 23/09/2008 14:16

Choosday
Jooty

I'd say SOOT as sut and SUIT as soot

What about EITHER/NEITHER?

gemmiegoatlegs · 23/09/2008 14:18

either and neither rhyme with breather!

Beetroot · 23/09/2008 14:19

Tube = toube

Tuesday - Tuosday

duty - duoty

Ie I pronounce the t and the d not ch j

PrettyCandles · 23/09/2008 14:34

Cautionary tale regarding sloppy pronunciation: I once started a new job and was shocked to hear statements like "These Jews have defaulted" and "Have you chased the Jews yet?"

It turned out that they were saying "DUES", as in payments due.

WendyWeber · 23/09/2008 14:43

soot rhymes with put
suit rhymes with flute

(I'm from Middlesex, poppyknot )

either = eye-ther
neither = nye-ther

and due, dew & Jew all sound the same

beety, I'm trying to imagine how Tuosday sounds

thumbwitch · 23/09/2008 22:57

Middlesex/Surrey girl here -
soot like put
Suit like flute
eether and eyether, neether and neyether, depending on context, bizarrely enough (or perhaps on how I'm feeling that day, whether or not there is an r in the month, or if the sky is blue, not really sure but I do use both pronunciations)

Due = dew but definitely not jew

mrsbabookaloo · 23/09/2008 22:59

These threads are no good unless everybody knows the phonetic alphabet and has it on their keyboard!! (ponce)

You can't tell from spelling: that's why spelling is so confusing!

SlartyBartFast · 23/09/2008 23:00

first examples in all cases

SlartyBartFast · 23/09/2008 23:01

oh, apart from suit, will think on that - or not

SlartyBartFast · 23/09/2008 23:03

ah, same as wendy webber - sussex girl here

actually i think i am an amercian with either and neither

and When are you due? when he is due? not like a jew.

SlartyBartFast · 23/09/2008 23:04
