"Sole-destroying"

My reply:

"Soul-destroying, not sole. Sole-destroying is when fisherman catch lemon sole or Dover sole, or when you go hiking in bare feet."

I just couldn't help myself. Sole for soul, bare for bear, and all the other things we've talked about. They are not difficult words! If you have O-Levels/GCSEs and do not have learning difficulties, this level of spelling mistakes in otherwise perfectly capable adults is just unacceptable. I would be so embarrassed to make such stupid mistakes in basic words. There are a LOT of people who need to read more - read actual books, not things on the internet where you're constantly exposed to other people's poor spelling. What on earth are the schools churning out these days!

Maybe they do it because the halibut looked at the salmon undressing and wanted revenge?

Well, sole-destroying made me laugh so these misspellings do have some function. Also, we're not all British here. I'm not, so have only learnt English as a second language but I do agree that reading is key. For someone who has always read boojs in their maternal language it's easier to read in a foreign language though, so I would say it depends on your education level overall.

Unfortunately reading books have become obsolete. My teenagers only read books if they have to (homework) and these are children who have always been read to and enjoyed reading when they were younger so I really despair..

I agree, OP. When you're communicating via the written word, it's important to get spellings right, or understanding and credibility can easily be lost. It's never been easier to look up how to spell a word if unsure. In most cases, it's primary school level English. Really depressing actually, especially how aggressive some people can be, in defending poor spelling.

DD1 has rediscovered reading in her late teens/early 20s now she has recovered from school making it a complete chore.

I find now in my 50s I make stupid grammatical errors at times for stuff I've known all my life. It's just a brainfart.

Also have you never heard of dyslexia? You sound ableist.

DoverSoul · 19/10/2026 09:12

Oh.

Don't play tennis on a clay court in your best running shoes.

Are you suggesting that nobody ever corrects anyone's spelling, ever, just on the offchance that someone might be dyslexic?

On here? Unless it's done kindly, yes.

@DeftGoldHedgehog , it's Pedants' corner. We come here to be pedantic.
In a thread elsewhere I wouldn't correct someone unless the post was hard to understand.

The frequency and nature of the misspellings and poor grammar suggests that posters don't know that the spelling or grammar is not right.
I'm actually surprised when I see some words spelt correctly because the misspelling is so prevalent.
