Pedants' corner

Concerned I have shamed myself with an apostrophe

As a fully committed pedant I am very worried that I have made an error with an apostrophe on Facebook and my RL pedant friends will be judging me.

I’m giving away some kefir grains and said “these have been used with semi-skinned cow’s milk”. Does that imply the milk of one cow? It should be “semi-skimmed cows’ milk” shouldn’t it?

Advice please.

How will you Carrie on?

NotTooOldPaul · 17/10/2026 10:59

Should it not be "semi-skimmed"?
As I am vegan, I suggest using a plant based milk to avoid this apostrophe problem.

Puhpuhpuhpuh · 17/10/2026 11:04

No, it’s cow’s milk when you mean the generic product. The number of cows is irrelevant. Similarly, goat’s cheese.

Lovephil · 17/10/2026 11:09

It wouldn't phase me (I’ve seen this incorrect spelling several times on MN recently).

SerendipityCat · 17/10/2026 11:09

I’m more worried about that “semi-skinned” cow’s milk. Doesn’t sound very appetising!

BrickBiscuit · 19/10/2026 19:31

Assuming you said 'skimmed' and not 'skinned', I think your apostrophe was correct. I am slightly disappointed, as about ten years ago I wrote a comment saying 'it's' for 'its'. I don't know if it was my mistake or an unnoticed autocorrect. I was very proud of the point I'd made, and reread the comment many times before I noticed. After about five years, I appended a correction as a reply, being unable to edit the original. Takes the shine off it a bit.

Yes the horror that strikes when you realise, as a pedant, that you’ve made one of the mistakes you’ve spent a lifetime correcting. It cannot leave one unphased 😬

AlbieJiggered · 19/10/2026 19:42

Please do not drink milk from semi-skinned cows.
Milk from semi-skinned almonds would be less cruel.

likelysuspect · 19/10/2026 19:49

I often pop up on this section as Im somewhat a pedant. But I kill people in this section by admitting to lack of use of the apostrophe.

Why?

Because 'Im' for example cannot (cant) be any other word can it?

Cant, can be another word, so I might pop one in there now and then

Theyre, cannot be any other word.

I write formal reports at work all day long and have to use correct grammar but I dont (dont) care on here.

In any case, judging by other answers I would have been wrong because I thought it was cows' milk. Several cows. The milk belonging to several cows.

Cattery · 20/10/2026 17:04

@likelysuspect The apostrophe is used in place of the missing letters

AlbieJiggered · 20/10/2026 17:52

Can one be 'somewhat a pedant'? I would say that someone who thinks it acceptable to use theyre and Im is not a pedant.

Definitely ask whether it's faze or phase, YAY or nay...

bigsquid · 20/10/2026 17:57

Can't can't be another word? That's simply nothing but empty cant.

Yes I know. And?

Is that addressed to me?

I said cant can be another word, so I pop one in here and there. Can't.

HeinousBeaker · 20/10/2026 18:59

I like cow-milk myself. The OED says it is obsolete, last used early 1600s, but what do they know.

Bit harsh?

Oh the horror!
I feel your pain.
I saw a private consultant recently rather than waiting two years on the NHS and my reply to his letter started
Dear Mr Robert’s
Bloody autocorrect!
I didn’t notice until after I had emailed and then tied myself in knots trying to decide whether I should email him to explain 😱

AlbieJiggered · Yesterday 21:25

I'll just order from one of those online gasses places.

Shouldn't it be plant-based?
